Our first meeting took place in my home on February 19, 2019. I had moved from Herzliya 6 months before and deeply missed regular sangha meetings, even finding it difficult to maintain my practice. One of my daughters suggested that I start a Sangha here. How to do this? I knew nobody in Modi’in. Rachel Ilfield had introduced me to one of her friends who lives here. I contacted her and she was delighted to join.
After our first meeting, she brought along several others, most of whom remained and form part of our regular meetings; together with my two daughters and friends who they invited. In addition, I befriended a neighbor who was hosting Wisdom of Ageing meetings and she, too, was delighted to join us. She has become a great support, to the extent of doing the guided meditation when I am too tired to do so, and even hosting when I’ve been ill, in order to maintain the continuity.
Before Covid we were around 12 to 15 regulars, but now are down to 7, sometimes 9. Our ages range from mid-40’s to early 80’s. I received much needed help from both Shelagh and Rachel Maori. Rachel even came all the way to Modi’in from Tel Aviv. Almost all the participants were new to the practice and did not know of Thay. Everyone has expressed deep gratitude for what these meetings give them and share how the practice is affecting their lives; the deepening of their practice is especially felt in the change of attitude expressed towards the 5 Mindfulness Trainings, and the quality of their sharing. I, needless to say, am deeply grateful that we have managed to form a stable sangha and for the wonderful energy brought to my home. May we continue for many years to come.
